HEAD OF HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT

Job Description

As Senior Manager you will lead the HW development engineering teams and report to the VP Engineering. The HW engineering teams contains the Integrated Circuit (IC, Sensors) design team, Camera design team, and the Driver design team.

The  main objective of the HW engineering is to define, develop & deliver the hardware products (IC & Camera IP and Reference Products, including low-level Software drivers and configuration Tools), part of Softkinetic roadmap in time and with high quality. The scope of the product development is from early feasibilities and prototypes, up to mature products in maintenance. With your broad technical knowledge and people & team management skills, you will do that together with a team of highly skilled and motivated technical experts and engineers.

The Engineering organization consists of following units:

  • System development,
  • Hardware development,
  • Software development,
  • Validation & QA,
  • Technical Project Lead unit, and
  • Corporate Application Engineering & customer Support unit.

The focus of the IC team is on the Time-of-flight sensor pixels, sensor products and system-on-chips (hardware, software and necessary tools) to be used in SK’s Cameras and Modules.  These developments are done together with IC design teams in Sony (Japan and USA, Israel).

The scope of Camera Module team is on Depth-only cameras and modules, based on Softkinetic’s Time-of-flight depth sensors (hardware – electronic and optical systems-, software and necessary tools); combining these with other technologies (like RGB, Audio) and embedded processing on Host/Embedded platforms is also looked at in Sony’s context. These cameras are designed by our Camera design team located in Brussels, with very close collaboration with the Camera Driver and Embedded team, while co-operating with Sony Module business units and ODM’s for their transfer to production.

The scope of Driver team is on developing and verifying low-level drivers and software tools, this for the Depth-only cameras & modules, and SK’s Time-of-flight depth sensors; Tools refer to configuration and verification tools used during the design phase, as well as tools to support external parties like Module Makers on configuring and calibrating sensors and modules. Porting such software onto embedded platforms and different OS, is also done in the Driver team; the platforms typically also allow to connect other sensors technologies (RGB…) and are the means to integrate Depth with such other technologies.

You will together with your teams interact with other units in the engineering organization ( System, Middleware, Validation and QA, Customer support ) to contribute to total system solutions, containing the developed hardware/software for IC’s and Camera modules. You will also interact with Tier-1 customers and licensees in early stages and throughout programs lead by the Technical Project Leaders (TPL), to understand their technical requirements, staff the projects and execute them, and deliver the products according to expectations. This will be done together with Technical Project Management , S&M , and Program Management.

Next to that, you will also contribute with the CTO organization to the definition, execution and reporting of Advanced Research programs. This position is located in Brussels.

  • You build project proposals (staffing – necessary allocation of resources to be able to execute the project, timing, cost) together with Technical Project Leaders – and execute them when approved.
  • You design and Verify: with the allocated people, Execute the approved projects of SK’s roadmap and deliver Softkinetic HW solutions, including low-level SW and Tools, as validated products  on time and with quality;  manage the design and verification tasks by your teams of the functionality and performance;  technically follow-up on the tasks done, and solve problems, or better anticipate and avoid problems; report progress on regular basis in program review meetings.
  • You work together with the Validation&QA team, which is the Quality gate to guarantee good quality before and at product release. The quality team is responsible for the Validation, but will be supported by your Design and Verification engineers.
  • You analyse any field-returns of released products, and define/plan maintenance updates and fixes.

Methods and tools:

You define and promote development of methods and tools for design, verification and validation; Analyse tools available from suppliers; increase design and verification competence and efficiency of the teams.  Agile development can be part of this.
